Gujarat Mega Jobs Fair for 60,000
Gujarat University’s affiliated and grant-in colleges have seen a series of 33 mega job fairs so far this year with a view to creating 60,000 job opportunities. The aim was to make Gujarat a model state in line with Prime Minister Modi’s call to create jobs in the country through Skill India, Make in India, Startup India, iCreate and similar campaigns. At similar fairs in 2016-17, 10 lakh youth were placed in various job roles across sectors. This year the fairs had received 70,000 registrations for 60,000 jobs attracting salaries ranging from Rs. 10,000 – Rs. 55,000 per month.
Dimapur Sees Full Placement for PMKVY’s First Batch
Dimapur, in the north eastern state of Nagaland, has achieved 100% placement in the travel and hospitality sectors for its first batch of students under the Prime Minister’s Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme. All 220 students from Dimapur have been gainfully employed under various job roles like F&B Service, Cabin Crew etc.

Schemes such as PMKVY are a life-line for far flung hinterlands in the country giving youth an opportunity to acquire industry relevant skills. In Nagaland alone, more than 1500 candidates have received certification out of which 900 candidates have been placed in various job roles. Youth from Dimapur’s first batch have landed jobs such as Cabin Crew with Spice Jet and Go Air Airlines, and with Star Cruise Hong Kong.
The Skill India Mission has received a massive fillip with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship’s (MSDE) flagship programme PMKVY successfully registering 10 lakh placements as of January 2019.
NSDC and Orane Partner with Bhartiya Skill Development University
National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC)-approved training partner Orane International has signed an MoU with the Bhartiya Skill Development University (BSDU), Jaipur, to offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree-level courses in beauty and wellness at the BSDU. The Annual Skills Report 2016-2017 of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship identified training and human requirement need of 8.2 million between 2017-2022 in the beauty and wellness sector, making it one of the highest growth sectors.

In a much needed move, the courses are focused on developing entrepreneurial skills and offer multiple exit options to gain certificates and diplomas leading to a Bachelors in Vocational degree or a Masters in Vocational degree in beauty and wellness from the BSDU. This is an important step towards bringing higher education in sync with skills based and vocational education, a bedrock of mature apprenticeship and skilling systems. The country’s rigid education system focused on conventional degrees has been much criticised for lack of foresight in making room for vocational education.

This partnership also allows existing students at Orane’s training facilities or past students trained by Orane to have their certificates and diplomas upgraded to the Orane-BSDU beauty and wellness degree program. Such recognition and transfer of credit points signals a new direction in skills based higher education offering students mobility to move from one degree to another based on recognition of prior learning. Orane is taking the lead on developing the curriculum for the degree level programs. Students will also get opportunities for on campus interviews for internships and work experience placements at Orane’s locations across India. Efforts are also underway to align Orane-BDSU courses with specifications of the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) to bring about standardisation and national recognition of their certificate and degree programs.

This is also in the direction of the government’s clarion call to industry to come forward and participate in skill development initiatives to generate skills based and industry relevant jobs.
The BSDU has modeled its skill development programs along the lines of the Swiss Dual System comprising of on the job training for the experiential part of the training and vocational school for the theoretical aspect after suitable modifications to meet the unique needs of the Indian industry.
